Investor Pulls out of Saldanha. (6 November, 1996)

A major European investor had decided not to back the Saldanha Steel Project because a report recommending environmental protection measures had been ignored, a parliamentary committee has heard. Parliament's Committee on the Environment should help implement the recommendations of the Steyn Board of Inquiry into the steel mill to ensure a proper future balance between the interests of developers and communities, University of Cape Town environmental professor Richard Fuggle told the committee.

Professor Fuggle, one of three members of the Board, said the Steyn Board's specific recommendations relating to the steel project had not been followed. Prof Fuggle said the plant was now fait accompli and no purpose would be served trying to have it removed. But the parliamentary committee could use its influence to ensure that the general recommendations of the Steyn Board were implemented, he said. Own Correspondent.
